Extension and Remodel
In Progress

A modern extension to a historic villa in the Grange Conservation Area of Edinburgh. The proposed extension provides contemporary living and guest accommodation to better suit the needs of a modern family lifestyle.

Process

Comprising two linear forms that pivot on a central courtyard, the extension provides a new kitchen / dining space, double height living room and additional guest bedrooms. The proposal is a direct response to the client’s brief of providing a greater connection to the extensive garden, whilst celebrating and framing the historic Georgian villa.

At ground floor, masonry columns are connected by a precast concrete band that connects the spaces and provides shelter externally. The first floor extension is clad in larch, a visually lighter material chosen for its proximity to established trees at the rear of the garden.

Reflecting the clients love of gardening, cooking and entertaining, external works include; a central courtyard, a covered outdoor cooking area and a vegetable patch adjacent to the kitchen.

Project ongoing.
